11.

The blaring of the digital alarm sliced through the quiet. A hand reached out from beneath the sea foam blue comforter. Cole groaned loudly while she blindly sought the machine that disturbed her sleep. The cordless telephone hit the floor with a crack before her fingertips finally managed to smash the silence button.

“C’mon, Cole,” she muttered and flung back the warm covers. “Don’t be a slug.”

Once her feet hit the floor she was wide awake. It was the process of opening her eyes Cole dreaded. On her way into the bathroom, she shook out her hair. Her mind had already begun to spin with thoughts of the work ahead at the garage. She snatched her toothbrush out of the holder and squirted a glob of peppermint gel onto the bristles before stepping into the glass enclosed shower.

The beginnings of a headache gnawed at her. Probably too much wine, she thought while the warm water ran down her spine. She had anticipated downing a handful of Motrin with her first cup of coffee as prevention. Appointments, if she recalled correctly, were slated for the entire day. She couldn’t afford to be slowed down.

A total of five minutes ticked by before she turned the shower off. After a quick toweling off, Cole dressed before heading downstairs. The strong aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled her nose the moment she entered the kitchen. She silently thanked the inventor of programmable coffee pot and began to flavor her to-go mug.

Cellphone in hand, Cole left her house before the sun filled the early morning sky. The drive across town had been short and without any traffic. To Cole that alone had been one of the pluses of starting work before the crack of dawn. She pulled into the parking lot directly adjacent to the garage almost at the same exact time as her grandfather. Theirs was a familiar routine, one repeated daily for the past ten years. Tenderness shown through both her eyes and smile as she cut the engine.

Three years ago, her grandfather had severely injured his back in an accident at the garage. He had been working on the under body of a vehicle when it had slipped from its jack. Cole St. John had a long recovery period to which he did not do well. At the urging of his doctors, he had no choice but to enter into a forced retirement. For a man who had spent his entire life ripping apart the guts of cars, not doing what he loved had practically killed him.

That was when she had assumed the responsibilities of day-to-day operations of the garage. The younger Cole handled repairs and the major overhauls she specialized in, while the older Cole ‘supervised’. She hated the look of devastation that had glazed the old man’s eyes. Not being able to stand the apparent hurt, Cole did her best to make her grandfather feel as if he were still needed.

“Good morning, Gramps.” She smiled brightly then slammed the car door shut behind her.
